So, I think that the vast majority of the portion of women that remain hypergamous for life and won’t settle for someone at their level (whatever portion that is, I clearly don’t think it’s all women since we can plainly see many that marry and stay happily married and don’t cheat) probably aren’t consciously thinking, I just want to fuck these higher value guys. I think they really are hoping for commitment. (Now, perhaps the 5% most promiscuous that really just love sex with lots of hot men are self-aware enough to consciously know that they are just going for sex with the best.)
The problem is that by definition a woman going for a higher-value man is of lower value to him and so why would he want to commit to her? Not very often will that happen.
So I agree with you that, subconsciously, the always-hypergamous portion of women really would prefer things in this order: 1) higher-value male commitment plus sex; 2) higher-value sex. But I think most of them are consciously desiring commitment because that would be their number 1 option and they rarely consciously admit that 2) is a viable plan B.
I also think there is a portion of women that are hypergamous for a while but eventually learn and get realistic and take a guy in their league.
Finally, in terms of raw economics, a lower-value woman only has easy sex as her “currency” to “buy” a higher-value male’s attention. If he wants commitment he’ll go for one closer to his own value.
